Ectropion is a condition where the lower eyelid turns outward, exposing the inner eyelid and leading to dryness and irritation. There are a few synonyms for this condition, including eversion, or having the eyelid turned inside out; eyelid laxity, or having loose eyelid skin; and outward rolling of the eyelid. Other terms used to describe ectropion include lower eyelid malposition, sagging lower eyelids, and eyelid ectropium. While ectropion is more common in older adults, it can also be seen in younger people who have suffered facial trauma or nerve damage. Treatment may include artificial tears, ointments, and surgery to tighten the eyelid muscles.
